NONOY ZUÑIGA –  “The Voice”

Pop icon and the quintessential singer….

On top of his successful singing career, he hosts a public service TV program in GMA 7 called “Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko”,  and an info-med TV program in IBC 13 called “MedTalk with Dr. Z”. He also heads EcoWise and NOW, 2 companies that deal with the preservation and conservation of our environment through proper waste disposal and the manufacture and marketing of organic products.

Nonoy Z’s singing career spans more than 3 decades; as a folksinger from 1971 to 1975 and then as one of the lead singers of the Family Birth Control Band which performed in the best nightspots and hotels like Philippine Plaza, Holiday Inn and the Manila Hotel from 1975-1980. To hone his skill, he took special voice training from the late Aurelio Estanislao, a well-known tenor singer and music-voice professor at the University of the Philippines.

With his clear baritone voice he started to attract the attention of music buffs. His style and rendition of different songs especially love songs made him acquire a number of distinct awards, to name a few :

All his performances in the US from 1983 to the present are well-acclaimed! He has also performed in Asia including the major cities of Australia, Japan,

South Korea, China and New Zealand.

 

Last June, 2000 in Toronto, Canada he gave an unforgettable performance  and was very much adored that he was asked to perform again the following year for 3 Valentine concerts.

 

Last April, 2002, he conquered once again the US East Coast,… He performed in SRO shows in Virginia, Virginia Beach and in Chicago, Illinois. He is raring to go back again to the US, this time in California on November for a 5-city performance.

 

2003, had been a very fruitful year for Nonoy Z… For the very first time he was teamed up with 2 top-rate performers, Rico J. and Marco Sison for 3 Valentine shows at the Music Museum called “Greatest Hits 2”. The show was an instant hit that it paved way for more shows. Last Aug 2, he did a very special show with 4 other artists, namely Hajji Alejandro, Rey Valera, Rico J. and Marco Sison at the Araneta Coliseum. The result was a smash hit!! The Big Dome was literally filled to the rafters, 25,000 fans poured in and sang their hearts out with the Vets... and their stars shone again as bright as ever like when they started some 2 decades ago... Everyone became young again that night!… A repeat was done on Sept. 26 on the same venue and the same magnitude of fans were there again!

 

Other performances followed.. Sept. 26 in Cebu… Oct. 3 in Hongkong…

and Nov. 8 in Toronto, Canada and Nov. 15 in Expo Filipino, Clarkbase, Angeles, Pampanga.

Shows in Canada and US marked the end of 2003… Nov.22 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California…Nov.23 at the Civic Center in San Diego, California… Dec.13 in  Vancouver, Canada.

 

2004 was even brighter for the Voice!

.. had a very successful Valentine concert at the Music Museum with Marco Sison, Miguel Vera and Ai-Ai de las Alas..

.. last June to August had a very successful concert tour in the east and west coasts of the US..

 

2005 proved to be more colorful, what with concerts in Hongkong and Dubai last February. From March to April, he finished back to back shows(4 shows each) in the US and Australia..  More US concerts followed: 4 in the eastcoast last October and 4 in the westcoast last December.

When it comes to his recordings, he has 12 CD’s and all either turned gold, platinum or diamond. His album of duets simply titled “The Duet Album”, with the best performers in Philippine soil as his guests, namely, Martin Nievera, Rico J., Hajji Alejandro, Lloyd Umali, Zsa-Zsa Padilla, Nanette Inventor, Janet Basco, Monique Wilson, Ima Castro, Cacai Velasquez and Dessa is a winner!He has an all-pop, all-english, all-acoustic CD… another hit…. titled  “Impressions”.

Last March, his album under Viva records called  “The Love Album” was released. It turned Gold on its 2nd month and Platinum 5 months after!

Just recently released is his DVD, featuring his concert, taped and recorded live at the Music Museum, last August 2, 2005.

 

2006 started with two Valentine shows at a plush concert venue in Tacloban,

Leyte. This was followed by corporate shows from Feb-March. A concert tour again in the U.S.. April 28 at the Pechanga Casino in San Diego, California. May 5- Calgary, Canada and May 7- Lisner Theatre, Washington DC. And lately, had 2 fund raising shows at the Music Museum. One was June 30(Scholarships for poor but deserving kids) and the other, August 26 (Medical and surgical support for poor patients of Delos Santos Hospital) .

Sept. 15 had a free concert in Angeles, Pampanga. Then on Nov. 16, 30 and Dec. 7 was special guest of Nina at the Music Museum. To end the year, he and Rey Valera gave a fund raising concert in Concepcion, Tarlac.

January 14, 2007, Nonoy Z. shared the stage with street kids at SM North.

Valentine month came and he had three SRO concerts: Feb. 13 at the Metrobar, West Avenue w/c was to raise funds for the nutrition of poor kids, project of  Rotary Club, Quezon City; Feb. 14 concert with Ivy Violan and Nanette Inventor at the Manila Peninsula ballroom and Feb. 16 at the Celebrity Sports Club. On March 2, he went to Cagayan de Oro City for another fund raising show. June 9, he hosted and performed for a concert, joining the world in celebrating Earth Day.

 

Impressive as it is, his star will continuously shine, whether it be in singing or helping his countrymen…
