12. Love The One You're With
In 2001,
Philippine male singer Nonoy Zuniga released Impressions. All of the
album's 12 songs are remakes of American songs, and include the
Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun," Michael Franks' "Lady Wants to
Know," and Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life."
Philippine singers often perform American or European songs on albums
and in concert settings. The mood of the album is smooth and easy, and
the songs are all well-known in the Philippines. An interesting aspect
of the album is that all song's feature voice and acoustic guitar,
along with bass, cello, and unobtrusive percussion on a number of
songs. There are no drums or electric instruments. Ten of the album's
12 songs are slow. Nonoy Zuniga acquits himself well throughout the
album, and his presentation is personable and enjoyable. The album
opens on a remake of the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun," which
features splendid acoustic guitar and nice cello playing. One of the
best songs is the performance of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine
of My Life," which contains enticing, bossa nova-like acoustic guitar,
and is initially performed at a much slower pace than the original,
but soon enough the pace quickens. Nonoy Zuniga sounds happy to be
singing such a good song. Also interesting is the remake of Stephen
Stills' 1971 hit, "Love the One You're With." The arrangement is
similar to that of the original (though there are no drums here), and
the song moves along in a spunky, enjoyable fashion. This album isn't
adventurous, but there are enjoyable moments in an easy listening
fashion. However, it doesn't take much creativity to remake American
music all the time.
