Live For Love
Smooth and
easy is the word on Init Sa Magdamag (Heat from Morning to Morning),
which compiles songs performed by Nonoy Zuniga on three of six albums
he recorded in the 1980's for the now defunct Telesis Records. Another
"best of" album, Never Ever Say Goodbye, collects material from the
three other albums recorded during the same time period. The material
on Init Sa Magdamag comprises smooth easy listening and
middle-of-the-road love songs, styles of music quite popular in the
Philippines. The ballads feature simple, easy-to-absorb melodies, with
some lyrics written in English and some written in Tagalog, the
Philippines' national language. It's easy to imagine American crooners
Perry Como or Vic Damone singing much of the material here, including
such tunes as "Just Tonight" and "Nang Minsan Lang" (Only Sometime).
Another song, "Live for Love," seems tailor-made for Matt Monroe.
There are also a few glitzy, showbiz-style numbers, including "Friends
or Lovers" and "Fill Up the Night With Music," which Jack Jones might
sing at a beauty contest. There is, in fact, a Jack Jones medley as
well. Nonoy Zuniga puts forth competent, smooth performances on all
the songs, which makes the schmaltzy material easier to digest.
